One eye at a time.

A daruma is a Japanese wish doll, modeled on Bodhidharma — the monk who is said to have sat facing a wall for nine years. It's round-bottomed and weighted, so however hard you knock it over, it rights itself.

A proverb travels with it: nanakorobi yaoki— fall down seven times, stand up eight. That's the whole object in one line. Not a promise you won't fall. A promise about what you do after.

A daruma arrives with both eyes blank. You paint the first one in when you set a goal — a real one, out loud, on the record. That's the state the mark holds now: one eye open, a commitment made, watching you until the thing is done.

Only when you reach the goal do you paint the second eye. The doll isn't decoration. It's an open loop you agreed to close.

Most goals fail quietly, in private, where no one painted anything. The daruma refuses that. It makes the commitment physical and the finish line visible, and it keeps looking at you until you get there.

When we start a 90-day Arc, the first thing we do is find your two eyes. The first eye is the bounded goal — the one with a real finish line, ninety days out, that we color in together. The second is the dream behind it, the long game in your own words. Every other line of the plan hangs off those two points.

The eyes get the attention, but the round bottom is the real teaching. Ninety days is long enough that you will get knocked over inside it — a bad week, a lost round, a plan that stops working.

The daruma's answer isn't to avoid that. It's built to be knocked over and to come back upright on its own weight. That's the part I care most about in this work — not the streak, the return.
